404.spam.machine est une performance en ligne automatisée qui a eu lieu en janvier 2001 sur la liste de discussion rhizome raw. Les erreurs 404 sur le site x-arn.org provoquaient l'envoi automatique d'un mail sur cette liste.
404.spam.machine is an automated online performance where a 404 error on x-arn website send an email on rhizome raw mailing list.
L'idée de départ de 404 spam machine est de relier deux actes distants, à priori dissociés. Le premier est un click sur un lien mort par un utilisateur x, le second est un envoi de mail sur une liste par un utilisateur y. La passerelle entre ces deux actions est un script php sur le serveur x-arn.org.
Le script récupère les requêtes de fichiers qui ne sont pas sur le serveur x-arn.org (erreurs 404), les analyse et renvoie les informations sur la liste Rhizome Raw. Les données ainsi remises en circulation sont : l'adresse IP et l'adresse d'hôte de l'utilisateur x, l' (les) URL du (des) fichier(s) recherché(s), l'URL du fichier distant contenant le(s) lien(s) à l'origine de l'erreur, l'adresse email de l'utilisateur y, l'heure et la date de l'erreur. Seule l'URL du fichier distant est complète et s'affiche donc en lien dans la plupart des logiciels de mail. Ainsi, si les récepteurs du mail suivent ce lien, ils sont en posture de reproduire l'erreur.
Le script ne s'active donc que sous l'action d'un utilisateur, mais ce dernier n'a pas nécessairement conscience des actions engendrées, a moins d'être lui même inscrit sur la liste de réception.
Cette action prend la forme d'un scoring (calcul de popularité) inversé ou les données recueillies ne sont pas des liens efficaces et ou elles ne pas non plus analysées dans un but d'amélioration des performances. Il est par ailleurs intéressant de constater que les 404 peuvent être provoquées à la suite de requêtes dans des moteurs de recherche ou les termes recherchés n'ont a priori pas de relation avec le contenu du site x-arn.org (erreurs en cascade).

In this case, the man was a PHP script which send an email when a 404
error occur in x-arn.org website. The file that contain the broken link
is read by the script, and its URL is linked in the email. So, in fact,
the so-called spam is the result of a global activity in the net,
reflecting the kind of disorganisation inherent to updating process,
file moving and renaming, as a network movement origin.
REPETITION
According to the scripting nature of this experiment, the information
can appear repetitive , but is quite always different from previous
one. ( see user host adress, link referer and mostly in latest version
the translation of IP adress through open IP processor).
A real repetition is possible when the user understood the process and
play with it in a determined way, then a 'real spam' can occur , as a
repetion of the same. In fact it's still not strictly the same, the
noticed time (day-hour)is changing.
REVERSE SCORING
The script may also be seen as a 'reverse scoring engine'. Effective
links provided in emails put the user in potential position of
repeating an error, but often, the error is first time generated by an
unwitting user, captured by the process in a disappointing way. The
information he was looking for has moved or does not exist. This may
provoke a depreciating sensation about the target website, here
x-arn.org. Further, this information is not used by the target as a
private information which should bring it in a more effective strategy,
but is simply publicly dispatched. The ' ineffective scoring process'
may in an ambiguous way regenerate itself when 'spectators-victims'
become 'actors -creators' and , for example , place bad links pointing
to the target in their own spaces.
ARCHIVING IN CONTEXT
Using a mailing list such as RHIZOME RAW to experiment this, provide an
automated archiving process to the performance, but above all, it
localize the input in a 'cultural net.art scene ' context , and doing
so, explore this collective global mind. Reactions are not considered as
individual,but as an equilibrium which try to determine itself, fixing
some tacit rules, and experiencing ways to apply them.
